According to The Next Web, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the launch of the "legendary" strategy game Age of Empires II, Microsoft announced that the Definitive Edition expansion of the title will be released on November 14th. This announcement was made by Microsoft at the Gamescom 2019 event on August 19th. Previously, the game was slated for an October release this year. The upgrade of this famous real-time strategy game will feature several improvements. Specifically, this version adds 4 new civilizations (bringing the total to 35 civilizations), 3 new campaign stories, and 4K graphics support. Upon release, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will be available on platforms including the Microsoft Store, Xbox Game Pass for PC, and Steam. Players who already own the game in their personal Windows Store library will need to download an entirely new version to transfer all pending game data as well as some achievements unlocked in the current version. However, some content in the current version will not be transferred to the new version, such as ELO rating points and unfinished in-game achievements. The previous remake, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition – which was released in 2018 exclusively on Microsoft Windows – will also be available on the same platforms as Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition for $19.99. Furthermore, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition will support cross-network play, allowing players from two separate platforms, Windows 10 (Microsoft Store) and Steam, to compete against each other. Age of Empires II first launched on September 30, 1999. The strategy game quickly took the number one spot on sales charts in the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia, and South Korea. Just 3 months after its release, Microsoft announced that over 2 million copies of the game had been sold. Before the 4K graphics version, an HD graphics version of the game was released in 2013 under the name Age of Empires II (2013) on the Steam platform.
